Andrew HornModeratorI’m really struggling to “be bothered” this week. Even Kate is beginning to wash over me.

Miss Mid-CityParticipantIt’s not that I’m upset by anything in particular but I’m fed up waiting for the scriptwriters to “put Heather out of her misery” – so to speak.
As far as I’m concerned, I’ll be glad when they make up their minds whether they’re going to kill her off, force her into a home, move her to Ambridge or send Ruth off “Up North” indefinitely. This current state of things has me at “breaking point”. Maybe this is a modern day dilemma for many families but as a listener who isn’t in that situation and has no real empathy(!), the drama is lost on me since it focuses on characters I don’t care for.
Actually, come to think of it I’d quite like Ruth to go away. I’ve never liked her. David should have married Sophie Barlow. She comes across as a good farmer and a good mum so I can’t put my finger on why she bugs me.

Blithe SpiritParticipantI could do without Kenton’s increasingly perverse attitude to his family and, well, pretty much everyone.
And Miss Mid-City’s right. Heather Pet’s situation is awful and heartbreaking, but it needs a practical solution – and Ruth needs to recognise that professional care is for the best. The poor woman’s clearly no longer able to look after herself, so the scriptwriters dragging it out and having Ruth doing begger all other than angsting every time she’s up in Prudder is getting a wee bit old…!

Miss Mid-CityParticipantI agree with you about Kenton, Blithe Spirit!
He needs to get a grip! I’ve heard other people comment on his recent behaviour and attempt to “rationalise” it when it’s actually “irrational”.
He’s becoming nasty and bitter – which is a complete reversal of his character. And now he’s reaching back into the vaults of family history to dredge up resentment towards David dating back to childhood. It makes me very uncomfortable …
He’s on the pile of people I can do without – along with Ruth.

Roifield BrownKeymasterThis week, I realise that I’m very upset because “my” Fallon has not made a worthwhile appearance in weeks!
August 5, 2015 at 5:50 pm #1459
Blithe SpiritParticipantRecently, established characters (and storylines) seem to drop off the radar so easily, or become weirdly silent for inexplicably long periods, only to suddenly re-emerge later.
Before there was some sense of a thread between each programme, even just to keep things ticking over. The programme has become pretty unbalanced as a whole in that respect.

Miss Mid-CityParticipantBlithe Spirit, I hear what you’re saying but I reckon the scriptwriters work out who’s available and find a storyline to fit. They try and make out they do careful story planning and plotting but that’s nonsense in my view. It’s not borne out by the stories we listen to.
There’s been no sign of loads of characters like Kathy and Jamie Perks, Chris Carter or the Pargetter twins for absolutely ages much less Fallon (who Ro I Field misses) and Burns.
And there seems to have been no real point in bringing Dr Locke or Carol Tregorran back, either. They’ve not been given very much to do so far.
Maybe they should just get rid of some people altogether because they’re so underused – like the vicar and his lot.
It would be nice to think some explosive story arcs are in development – or just some stories that are a bit more well-thought-out would do.

AnonymousInactiveBoudicca… This isn’t really the right spot to post this as it doesn’t really upset me, it just grates, but not enough to make a whole new post. When did Boudicea become Boudicca? We were always taught to say Bow-di-see-a at school, admittedly a few years ago. When did people start saying it with a hard C and why wasn’t I informed? Bah humbug.

Miss Mid-CityParticipantPip + either Fairbrother botherer = pure Mogadon.
Yawn!
September 21, 2015 at 12:58 pm #1851
Aunty JeanParticipantAgreed the Mogadon three are very sleep inducing. Mainly for me because none of them sound like real people.
I’ll admit that I am in a similar situation to Ruth as my 94 yr old now needs extra care. We are going thru all the hoops (there are a LOT) with social adult services and her housing Assc landlord. It all takes so long and in the meantime my brother and I worry endlessly about her. On Friday she toddled off on her own only to forget how to get back to her flat!
But at NO point have I reacted like Ruth, at NO point have I rung my fingers or screamed at my family. And we’ve just had to say to Mum ‘you need more care than we can offer’.
Maybe we just have more common sense than Ruth! But she is making a meal of it. She’s making a burnt frozen chips meal if it!!
I’ll just mention how you can now hear the fear of Rob in Helen’s voice. She’s always trying to placate him. And apologising constantly for things that don’t require an apology. It is very upsetting at the same time as making me scream at the radio.

Charlie CatParticipantIt was misprint in a school text book apparently that changed the pronunciation, according to the “Stuff you missed in History Class” podcast i listen to anyway!
September 21, 2015 at 3:13 pm #1854
Charlie CatParticipantPip being good with cows…shes a farmers daughter who raise mostly, cows, id be worried if she wasn’t.
September 22, 2015 at 8:01 pm #1877
WitherspoonModeratorCharlie Cat, I also listen to Stuff You Missed In History Class (not every week though), but Roifield has told me he doesn’t like it.
It may be a little one, but my constant pet peeve is when a spouse refers to their spouse’s parent by a first name when in conversation with their spouse, rather than “your mother, your mom, your father, your dad,” etc. For example, if Ruth is talking with David, she’ll say something like “when is Jill getting out of here?” rather than, “when is your mom getting out of here?” It always sounds rather odd to me. Is this an Archers thing, or a British vs. American thing?
September 23, 2015 at 4:34 pm #1883
Aunty JeanParticipantIt’s not a Brit thing Witherspoon. I’d say ‘when’s your mum coming over’ but to be fair it’s a bit hit and miss on the archers. Ruth will say where’s Jill? But also where’s your mum. She see-saws a bit. As does jolene with Kenton, sometimes Jill sometimes your mum. Brian always seems to call Peggy Peggy when talking to Jenny dahling or Lillian only occasionally using your mother.

Tracy ChevinParticipantMy first post on the fourm, I’ve only been listening to dumteedum for about 5 weeks. I wish I had found you sooner!
Oh my, I’ve just caught up on last night’s offerings and I’m so annoyed with Jenny Dahling and her trying to be Miss bloody Marple. Trying to catch Christine out for killing her husband. I know it’s topical with the asssisted dying bill being in the news, but her prying is just so wrong. And I’m glad that Lilian (teamlilian) was sensible and told her that its not her business and so what if she did help, her husband was dying.
Sorry but when a storyline hits so close to home it just filled me with rage. My hubby has terminal cancer and would appreciate the use of assisted suicide. I feel so strongly with people who spout on about ‘its illegal’ ‘they’ll start killing off disabled people’ blah blah blah! What about people losing their dignity in the final stages… we don’t do it to animals.
Sorry Rant over
Thanks for the podcast Roifield and Lucy.
