I don’t know for sure, don’t know if anyone does but I get the impression she is just overwhelmed and doesn’t care about anything except Henry at the moment. She feels doomed and just wants to withdraw from everyone and everything. I don’t understand why Anna T doesn’t appeal to Helen’s concern for Henry. Anna seems to treat Henry’s situation as a different issue. Of course it is a completely different legal case but if Helen can state why she is concerned for Henry’s safety and the terrible things that Rob did, then it is more likely Henry can live with Pat and Tony. I am willing for Anna to say “if you want the best for Henry, you need to remember what happened that night.”

I agree that she is feeling warn down and defeated, and as such, I think Helen is feeling much the same as many of us are at the moment which is extreme fatigue with the story line and not wanting to think or talk about it any more- like those of us who have chosen to stop listening. For her, being locked up has gotten her away from Rob and his abuse, and she is surrounded by strangers who are not asking anything of her. She is completely free from having to make decisions for herself or explain herself. She can just tune out and not think at all except to comply with prison rules. If it weren’t for Henry I think she would be content to serve time. But then who really knows…..

I think mainly because of the options above, [C] = [B]

The shame and terror are easier to keep at bay if she just shuts everything (and thus everyone) out

Thanks everyone for the insights. I think I do now buy that Helen is traumatised, feeling guilty / weak / all those awful things Rob said to her, and probably feels unworthy of visitors. I thought Paul Trueman nailed it when he said on DumTeeDum that Helen alternates between the subjugated, numb, guilty weakling Rob has made her and then, occasionally, outbursts of rage – especially when Henry is at risk. I’m really hoping she can begin awakening to a more normal way of functioning soon, but I guess childbrith may not the the best time for that, especially if Rob gets the baby away from her.

I think Helen is showing encouraging signs now so far as willingness to connect with others. The fact that she tried to talk to her lawyer about her feelings about little Jack shows she’s coming out of the fog and gaining a little insight into her situation. She seemed positively normal when chatting with her brother. I feel a lot better about her.
