The show can’t always be topical and on the ball! I suppose it’s also to do with the availability of actors. No doubt at some point there’ll be a massively significant national or global event which calls for an urgent, timely reaction reflected in the script (maybe a significant terrorist attack or the sudden death of someone important, for example). Scotland’s first Calcutta Cup victory in a decade isn’t it … !

On the subject of rugby, we didn’t hear anyone commiserating with Philip over Wales’s defeat, either.

    That’s made me think.

Cricket seems to be the only sport they follow in The Archers but they rarely talk about the England team. Sport doesn’t feature often. There’s a few people who ride horses, a couple who run, a bit of swimming, golf and keep fit so I imagine the characters have a passing interest in sport but they didn’t mention the Winter Olympics at all. Even people I know who don’t normally watch sport tend to follow the summer games.

I suppose the characters have better things to do!
