Aaahh, Witherspoon – or should I say Lieutenant Columbo?! – you’re spot on.

If Nic was the hit-and-run driver it would be convenient but unconvincing.

That was the sound of a “boy racer” in a souped-up hot hatch – not a conscientious mum in a hurry. And the character we remember as Nic would have been beside herself with horror and guilt. We would have heard her stop, get out and panic at the scene and she would have been haunted by her actions every time she went to church – I can imagine her constantly on the verge of wanting to tell Alan (yeah, even though it’s an Anglican church, not Catholic). Come to think of it, neither she nor William said anything about her car looking like it had a big, Matt-shaped dent in it and Harrison’s enquiries didn’t seem to include inspecting very many vehicles around the village.

I reckon you’re onto something when you say it could have been Alice. I imagine she has a sporty kind of car that sounds like the one in the recording. And maybe her guilt is why she’s taken to more frequent excessive drinking.

What I don’t need now, is Joe or Ed letting Nic’s deathbed confession reach William …

Thanks, MMC! And I agree 100% with your last statement. But as it’s The Archers, that’s exactly what will happen!

I’m not so sure that has to be the sound of a sports car speeding away: it could be a more modest car with an underpowered engine flooring it to get away at moderate speed.

I don’t think the confession will turn out to have been a simple mishearing—that’d be too anticlimactic and unsatisfying dramatically (who’s going to convince Joe he got it wrong?).

The more implausible question might be why Nic didn’t confess to anyone, and instead allowed her sense of guilt to colour her behavious towards Will, Emma, Jolene etc. with detrimental effects for all.

I don’t care about this storyline anymore. Why are we continually subjected to hints and heartache from Joe and Nic about it, I honestly have no idea! If there was any sort of consequences or payoff concerning it -I would have enjoyed it but nope. Did Matt have a serious injury or die? No.Is he even in Ambridge? No. I would rather know what was in his bag(though I suspect it was money or gold bullion at this point) Why anyone would have any guilt or consternation over MATT DELBOY CRAWFORD is beyond me. I understand Nic was a nice person and took the weight of the world on over any failing but Matt didn’t have any serious repercussions and was probably scamming someone as Nic was lying in her deathbed. Feels like really a failure on the writers who I have a mental picture of throwing their hands up and pulling a name out of a hat of who they could suggest ran over Matt.

The mystery I would love revisited is who blocked the culvert? At least that could lend itself to character development and juicy storylines. I mean if Nic ran over matt, how does that do anything rather than give worries to Joe and make arguments between the family if Joe mentions it to Will. Nic can hardly pay for her crimes beyond the grave?!

Or even the mystery of what happened to the bunting? That would be a cute joke if someone finds the bunting in someones attic and would satisfy the longtime archers fans. If one of the grundys went up to the attic or shed and found that and figured out Nic had done that, that would have been great and a bit of a funny aside to the listeners and answered a trivial mystery. It would not have been criminal but just a bit on the shady side as we know harrison burns made a thing of looking for it (don’t remember it but for all the dumteedum mentions of it). Take that for Nic rather than running over Matt and her last words are she is going to hell for running him over:(

The revelation that Will already knew that Nic was the driver of the car that struck Matt made me laugh out loud at the utter ludicrousness!

There was no need for a deathbed confession to Joe. It served no purpose.

Why would Nic want to torture Joe with a deathbed secret after she and Will had kept it to themselves all that time? It’s clear to me that they would have kept it to themselves indefinitely; it was only sharing a little liquor with Ed that loosened Will’s lips.

And why did Nic feel the need to waste her last breath telling Joe what he didn’t need to know instead of sharing her last moments with Will or instead of making some dying declaration of love for Will and the children?!

    It’s bizarre! And stupid!

(But for future knowledge, I’d be very, very careful of Will … perverting the course of justice, aiding and abetting his late wife to conceal an offence – that man is ice cold! Both he and Nic were the perfect picture of boring normality on the surface but now we know better!)

Exactly my thoughts Miss mid-city -way to drain the potential drama out of a storyline. Will saying all that to Ed where he admitted to aiding and abetting his wife in the commission of a crime with no push from Ed that he knew just killed my sense that the writers knew what they are doing. It feels like they wrote up to the accident on Matt and then filled in the simplest person they could with no repercussions for Matt or Nic. What consequences occurred because of this storyline. Nil. A lot of hot air…

Also talking about Nic wasting her last breath on this and dragging herself over the coals over it and as good as saying she was going to hell-how miserable is that? Just putting trauma on the audience. All this guilt and Matt is running around the world as far as I know as healthy as they come!
