Our favourite slice of countryside reportage often repays careful listening. At the moment I am deeply distressed that there is no good reason why Beechwood Joy should exist – village incomers have to have a reason for being in that location and for the writers not to bother to explain why “Beechwood” has landed from outer space just makes her an alien. Normal people would tell their neighbours (Kirsty and Phil) why their Tardis has materialised and the absence of this information is distorting our view and enjoyment of “Beechwood”‘s tittle tattle as Margaret Woolley described it.
However I have to take the hosts this week – Angela and “Sans Plectrum” Robert to task this week over Lizzie and her meeting on Friday with Jamila (now better known Aggie, the matriarch of the first black family on the Street, which is a matter even Sir Lenny Henry felt worthy of comment during his appearance in Basingstoke on Sunday evening – yes I do get out and he is worth going to see on his book tour – 60 years to get the first “Black Family”). I have relistened to the session and Lizzie reported she had slowly reduced the drugs dosage; that she had coping strategies planned; that she had handled two difficult situations which could have knocked her sideways, even if they had gone wrong and she had largely defeated those inner voices expressing negative views whilst she was now looking forward to removing the aspic around her life and Lower Loxley which had developed since David killed Nigel and was going to be making changes. I know Witherspoon (not the pub chain) holds different views – but given the time constraint TPTB did cover the majority of bases in a few minutes – so I do feel the criticism was just a little harsh personally.
And Alf returned. So just who did take the money for the church curtains. Will Alf lead George astray or will he offer Will new employment somewhere else?
