DTD: 274 – Ted Kelsey who played Joe Grundy passes away.

The weekly examination of Ambridgian doings is tinged with sadness following the sad passing of Ted Kelsey as his long term contribution is acknowledged by fellow cast members, Roifield, Lucy and the social media team.  The Archers is one of the very few programmes that continues to welcome and encourage the activities of the older village members right up to the point at which they are unable to be heard at all. However opinions vary on Peggy.  Roifield provides a supporting voice for Peggy but Lucy espouses a less positive appreciation.  Peggy’s journey from left wing firebrand to the alleged […]

DTD: 273 – Old Town Road Ambridge

Both the presiding judge and I had hoped that confining young Freddie to the care of Her Majesty for a period of time would enable the over-privileged, brain-dead, feckless scion of the house of the flying Nigel to undertake a period of mature reflection and consideration.  Nothing however seems to have got through the ears of the idiot until Russ tried to explain a few facts; will it last?  I doubt it! It strikes me however that Borsetshire is in a completely different universe.  Most mother and son pairings with two important appointments with no other commitments such as work […]

DTD: 269 – Emails in span folders and a brilliant Dumteedum!

Last week you may remember that everyone loved Natasha, the sexy Welsh rarebit.  This week she receives a full scale demolition job from Lucy who spends six of her five minute visit to Ambridge dealing with the Welsh witch.  I did say that she was not everyone’s cup of tea!  Roifield likes the character if nothing else.  Wonder of wonders the wonderful JoJo sexy heels returns to the contributor’s bench from illness.  I was surprised that we did not hear how the story turns over the last couple of weeks relate to the elegance and inevitable sexiness of Natasha’s heels […]

DTD: 268 – Lee and Helen and Emma and Mia

Voice recognition.  Once again the hoary old chestnut about the similarity of all the male voices (Russ/Tom/Rex/Toby/Ben/Ruaridh) within the docudrama is raised.  I reckon that those of you with (Alexa / Siri / Bixby / other possibilities probably exist) need to train your system to recognise the separate voices so they can shout out “Tom”, “Russ” or as appropriate.  Or the new editor could just revert to good wireless practice and inset names when participants are talking to each other.  For those who want to see how it is done just watch Tracey McDonald talking to her husband Steve McDonald […]

DTD: 267 – Where is Hanna and why no Kate?

Wedding week.  I think it is fair to report that Lucy was not impressed by the wedding.  Indeed what was the point of making up that Natasha’s parents had broken down and Tony was asked to walk her down the aisle?  Her parents would have travelled the day before and stayed with her overnight – this was poor.  Equally poor was the stag night – but then you need Rob to organise one of those and send the groom off to Mid Wales or similar, not listen to shoes being shone! And can I raise a pet peeve?  An upstairs […]

Ep: 266 – Lee Helen and the Tiramisu with added Firestarter to boot

Ambridge residents seem to move rarely – well farmers usually live on their own farms and so removal men are rare.  We saw the Aldridges forced to downsize last year and Alison has been working out that a whole series of moves are afoot. Ed and Emma and the children will be off to their (whisper it quietly) tiny affordable home on Beechwood.  Lucy reckons that somehow “Tim nice but Crim” will rip them off before it happens. Eddie, Clarrie and Joe have to leave Grange Farm as the rent is too high.  William will realise that the best tenants […]

DTD: 265 – Susan and Jenny fix the blocked sink

I have a new business idea: “Wenches with a Wrench”.  This should work well during the “Lenten Bob-A-Job” week in Ambridge, no plumbing job too large or too small, if you send for “Jennan”.  Blocked u-bend?  Radiator not warming? Drain not draining – who gonna call? “Jennan – Wenches with a Wrench”.  Should go down an absolute storm and earn a lot for the vicar as Jenny and Susan swing into action with wrenches, grips, plungers and blowtorches!  Well it is more fun than depression as experienced by Elizabeth, Mia and William all of whom were on a bit of […]

DTD: 264 – Like how many calls?

Much of this week’s podcast discusses depression and the impact arising therefrom.  Lucy discloses her own knowledge of such matters and feels that the matters which we talk about in whispers (eg – they are not married you know) are probably the ones about which we should converse at the top of our voices.  Not all mental health issues are depression of course and not every cause of depression is an example of poor mental health – the terms are not synonymous. Having listened again to the Omnibus I am rather more struck that I think the writer this week […]

DTD: 263 – Boring gays, Roifield and New York Nigel get into a tussle

Lucy remains under her blanket as she delivers her weekly discourse on Ambridge events, apparently the only solution is for her to return to her former house!  The unexpected appearance of Mr Mason from Downton Abbey receives comment but he obviously has farming experience and being distracted by him explains Jill’s inability to spot mental illness at Lower Loxley.  Carolyn Pickles also has famous connections as Lucy lays out for our delectation.  Bridge Farm management and economics come under the microscope and we all it hope it leads to Tom and Kirsty becoming a couple again by Christmas.  Roifield, there have been developments […]
