Much of this week’s podcast discusses depression and the impact arising therefrom. Lucy discloses her own knowledge of such matters and feels that the matters which we talk about in whispers (eg – they are not married you know) are probably the ones about which we should converse at the top of our voices. Not all mental health issues are depression of course and not every cause of depression is an example of poor mental health – the terms are not synonymous.
Having listened again to the Omnibus I am rather more struck that I think the writer this week (the inestimable Mary Cutler, current longest serving writer I believe) was also seeking to draw some parallels between the long term impact of grief with Lizzie and shorter term impacts with Will; in retrospect Lizzie did not have the opportunity to deal well with her situation on Nigel’s death and the pain is being felt many years later. So will Will suffer a similar breakdown in a few years’ time or will young carer Mia’s efforts eventually be properly valued?
With this docu-drama we listeners know that we will hear these stories play out in real time.
Witherspoon also marks the two handed episode between Lizzie and her therapist, accepting that in 13 minutes they covered more than he might in a first 90 minute session – but few of those would probably make for decent radio listening. And again as we had some other character back stories a few weeks ago, new listeners (and there are always some) will now have a far better idea of how Elizabeth Pargetter ended up on her back on the therapist’s couch!
