This week is important.
At times there have been suggestions that the powers that be might kill off The Archers, until eventually a myth seemed to develop and envelop the programme in some kind of magic force field that made it feel that the series was so iconic and everlasting that unlike Eldorado or Brookside there was nothing, not even stupid stories and unbelievably bad editing decisions, that could stop the juggernaut rolling on for ever.
We have suffered the motorway by pass being diverted, the village drowning, the residents moving to Northumbria, mystical recoveries from drug overdoses, being forced to listen to some nonsense about control which was educational until it stopped being educational, the loss of the village gamekeeper as modern townie ideas prevailed, a stuffing in a culvert, some of the longest screams imaginable, organic farming was good except when it wasn’t, intensive farming was good until it wasn’t and a builder still using horses when we all know that Blossom and Boxer were the last working horses in living memory. Indeed the programme had more lives than a cat, although Hilda probably skews that statistic.
Eventually the programme has come to an end as an invisible mugger with a threat level of 4 apparently has been getting down everyone’s lungs and it is now illegal to breathe, at least that is what I think the Prime Minister said.
So our hosts this week discuss the last ever real week in Ambridge. If it ever returns we can no longer take refuge in the unique status of telling a constant rolling story passing from generation to generation with microphones catching conversations.
