Blithe SpiritParticipantHmmm… well, if you’ve heard Sunday’s edition, the situation’s very different! Justin clearly has no moral compass: he has paid off Stefan, and is now putting Lilian in an even more compromising position by making her a potential accessory to corporate crime. Knowing what she does, she cannot possibly contemplate covering this up – it’s immoral.
You know we’ve all been scratching our heads as to why Rob was recruited to Demara? Now it all makes sense. Justin basically needed a hatchet man: someone with no intimate connection to the locals, who wouldn’t reveal his plan, and who could do his dirty work for him. It’s simply inconvenient that Justin had to get rid of Rob as early as he did, as he’d have served his purpose well for longer. (And he treated Rob just as badly as Charlie – definitely not a one-off.)
Justin’s first attempt to get Borsetshire land failed, so he retrenched, charmed local society, bedded Lilian, and is now planning to retender the contract that will service Brian’s debt if Brian does purchase the land – and no doubt, ensuring he doesn’t get it. The fact that Justin is pressuring Brian to buy is no coincidence. This will leave Brian in deep financial trouble, then Justin can make his move on Home Farm and grab the land he’s wanted all along for his own ends.
In short, he’s a callous, devious bastard and utterly without conscience. He even got Rob to give him the information he wanted about the financial performance of the land before bringing up the Stefan business. And he’s corrupting Lilian. Horrible!

WitherspoonModeratorSunday’s episode did quickly answer questions regarding Justin. We may conclude that Justin was shocked that Rob displayed such poor judgment and decision making. Morality (his or others) doesn’t much interest him; though on the immorality scale, he probably falls just short of Rob.
After we waited for so long to learn the fate of Stefan (glad he wasn’t floating face down somewhere), the whole affair seems to have been wrapped up in shockingly quick speed upon his return.
It’s like the end of one of those cheesy 1950s films, where “The End” morphs into a giant question mark. Is it “The End”?…nah.

Ms BubblesParticipantInteresting points here. Bithe Spirit, you have thought this through in some detail. I was thinking though, couldn’t Justin have purchased Grange Farm which Caroline and Oliver couldn’t sell recently. I know the house is probably not large enough for him but there is plenty of land for him to build whatever monstrosity he would like on it. He was planning to do something similar at Brookfield.
In relation to Rob, I really question how real this job offer was. Rob said that his reference stated that his previous employer would have him back any time. What Rob said and what the facts are, are often quite different. The reference may not have said that at all or may have been much more vague than he was quoting. Secondly, just because someone wrote it in a reference, it doesn’t mean they actually mean it. There may be no actual job going at the moment. The company could have gone out of business! Also a general statement of approval is not the same as an open job offer.
Rob never actually said he had a job in the US. It was only Justin who said that. I think he probably doesn’t have a job offer. I am not even sure he has left Ambridge. Justin said he had cleaned out his desk. That is a long way from getting on a plane and going to another country.Witherspoon, I am pretty sure you are right and this is not the end of Rob.

GemmaPudParticipantOooh it’s definitely not the end of Rob. I was caught off guard by Justin’s reaction too but the more he spoke it became blindingly obvious that he doesn’t care for Ambridge or what happened the night of the flood…(was he there that night?? I can’t remember) Justin is all about DL and not much else. I’m beginning to wonder did he ever even have real feelings for Lillian or has she been a pawn in his game for land?! I hope our Lillian doesn’t let us down and keep this secret. Rob deserves to pay for what he’s done and Justin can’t be one of these people who get away with things because of “money”. The door may be open for Charlie to return but hopefully Ian and Adams isn’t. They are finally back on track and I adore them, there’s too many love triangles in the archers as it is leave Ian and Adam alone! ?

Blithe SpiritParticipantThe thing about the job in the States was a total crock on Rob’s part, just pure bravado. His MO, when he finds himself vulnerable and powerless, is first to display desperation, then sneering rejection of whatever’s countering him: ‘I don’t need your job/tawdry village shop/whatever, I can get this somewhere else/I’ve better offers elsewhere’ etc. It’s all self-delusion designed to reinflate his narcissistic ego.
Rest assured, we definitely haven’t seen the last of Rob. Apart from anything else, the SWs wouldn’t dare cheat the audience out of either a damn good showdown, or at least some kind of respectable closure – not after everything SOC put us through for the last two years.
No, Rob might have ostensibly cleared out of Ambridge, but he’s probably retreated to that dysfunctional snakepit of a parental home to lick his wounds. He’ll be back. The only thing he has left is GiddyJack – and I strongly suspect he’ll try and take him. Helen had better be vigilant, because we already know that Rob’s the type to lash out when backed into a corner, and he’s a right evil fecker!
Plus there’s the question of child maintenance and the divorce to tie up – he can’t simply disappear. Helen doesn’t seem too bothered about it now, but her family is in debt due to all the legal costs and she can’t afford to live in financial la-la-land. Rob now has a responsibility towards the kids, so if Helen doesn’t go after him for money at some point, the Child Support Agency will.
