Glyn FulleloveParticipantMy feelings can be summed up by if a story’s worth telling, its worth telling well – and this story is both worth telling, and is being told well.
I do think of The Archers as drama rather than entertainment, and I expect dark and difficult themes to be explored as well as the more run of the mill aspects of rural life. Great drama has always mixed challenge with entertainment, from the days of Euripides, and I believe the current editor has made it clear he sees TA as being in a dramatic tradition. I don’t expect listening figures to fall off; doing something well will rarely lose a significant amount of the audience, even if the content is challenging. There will be some for whom the content is too close to the bone, a risk the dramatist always has to take; for others, it will open their eyes to something they were hardly aware of – and I would put myself in this category on this story.
I would agree that the story needs to move to some form of resolution. In real life this could go on for years, but it is in the “art” of drama to constrain a story within a span the audience can cope with – otherwise the senses become dulled. So far the writers, have, in my view, avoided this by pushing the boundaries of what Rob is capable of, but I suspect we are reaching a limit. There are strong rumours that things will come to a head at Christmas, and whilst that is a bit melodramatic in some ways, Christmas is also a time when emotions can boil over, so it would not be far-fetched for something to happen then.

WitherspoonModeratorWell said, Glyn. If this were the story of the unravelling of a real life couple, we would be likely following it for years. As difficult at times as the storyline is to listen to, in order for it to reach a resolution, the stress and conflict will only significantly increase over the next couple of months (we hope for only this length of time), until some consequences are reached (we hope) for Rob. So be prepared to experience much upset going forth (again, the mark of an excellent storyline).
On the lighter side I present you with an article about America’s own Donald Trump. I cannot comment on his psychological make-up, as my friend Bob Klitzman says, as it is would go against the code of ethics of the American Psychiatric Association. But as for Rob Titchener, I can comment all I want, as he is a fictional character (I only wish that “the Donald” was fictional as well). Feel free to compare Rob and Donald.

AnonymousInactiveDonald Trump’s actually REAL, Witherspoon? We were quite desperately hoping he was an elaborate holographic joke… (Friends in Connecticut tell me he’s very unlikely to get the nomination. I can only hope they’re right)

Greavsie E17ParticipantAunty Jean: thank you – much appreciated. Debated whether to write that bit and have just had another little cry reading back what I wrote! But one day at a time and all that. Thanks again.

Glyn FulleloveParticipantWhilst I doubt it will ever happen, a summit between President Trump and Prime Minister Corbyn could be interesting….
