Actually I’m sure he’s done bouts of contrition a number of times when it suited him. And also pre-emptive manipulative behaviour when he would tell Helen she was the expert and belittle his own opinions, then endlessly question her judgement – pretty much anything to do with the shop went like that, and the stuff about her driving herself etc.

He always sensed when to reel in the dominance to win a bit of confidence and I don’t believe him now. Although I agree he is incredibly plausible. To the extent he will leave Helen feeling bad for not giving the presents. Prime manipulative behaviour to say “you’ll give the presents to the boys because you’re a good person” – ie if you don’t then you’re a bad person. Makes me shudder to think of it.

    Merry festivities to you too.

    Sam-

That person must be very skilled and have had powerful sway over you to bring you back into the fold…much like the influence Alan is supposed to have over Rob. A Christmas/Hanukkah miracle! Do I believe that could have happened-not for a New York minute! Rob mentioned that he had been “talking to Rob”-were there conversations we didn’t hear or was he just embellishing the last one that we did hear?

The scene with Alan was a demonstration of how broken and fragile a man he is. That leads to another one of my “predictions sure to go wrong”….listen to this week’s podcast to find out what it is!

Happy Festivus from the city that brought you Seinfeld and may the Ambridge Panto bring much joy to Keira and George.

Witherspoon’s right, and I don’t buy this apparent Damascene conversion either – it’s a total crock. The Dark Lord’s too much of a twisted narcissist to even contemplate a course of action that wouldn’t be self-serving in some way.

He was simply using the alleged conversations with Alan to try and manipulate Helen into going back to him, or at least viewing him in a kinder light – it wasn’t about genuine reconciliation; it was, as Kaz pointed out, an attempt to re-establish his power in the relationship. And thank heavens Helen said no.

He’s a consummate master of the slow-drip: pushing and cajoling and making nice until he gets what he wants. Then it’d be carte blanche for the cycle of abuse to start all over again. When other people refuse him, he turns openly nasty. At least everyone now knows how he operates and is wise to it.

It’ll be interesting to see what effect the reappearance of Stefan has. Now, there’s someone with real power to destroy him, and we all know that Rob’s about power play – here’s hoping it’ll take the b’stard down for good!
