With most optimistic of estimates saying that around 5% of people identifying as gay if they had the unfettered choice, and with Ambridge seemingly have a population of about 50 speakers per month, Adam and Ian and the occassional drop-in seems about right. So, if you want a full time lesbian couple, you’d have to get rid of Adam and Ian.

However, I have come to subscribe to the non-binary, sexuality is a continuum argument, so once Pip has done straining Toby’s groin, she and Alice (after some argument with Chris) can have torrid pity sex, or maybe Helen and Kaz can go all Orange is the New Black on us.

Not sure if radio 4 is ready for that though.

It begs the question would it better to have a couple move in to the village or for one of the current residents to be a lady gay? As Susan Calman would say.

My money is on Phoebe, and wouldn’t Kate have a field day? She would be unbearable. Not that she would disapprove just that she would be wildly overenthusiastic about it. Poor Phoebe.

I may be being very naughty, but I’m sure I’ve imagined Jill and Carol enjoying a good mutual banjo-strum.

I’m the first-time caller-innerer who spotted that Max, AnnaBarrister’s ex, is a “he” and went on to bemoan the lack of gay female characters in a spirit of equality of opportunity, programme balance, etc.

I mean, Adam has been an openly gay man for… 20 years? More? as well as being a principal character.

Now I know I have an appalling memory, but I cannot once recall even a temporary, single-issue character, even possibly being a gay female.

Claire Howard, I agree: it would be brilliant if Phoebe declares herself.

Another “diverse” character would be good. Maybe someone who’s non-binary. Perhaps Ben or one of the other silent children might turn out to be gender fluid.

Kiwi Listener might be surprised that Radio 4 might get on board with this!

How about Keira turning out to be gender fluid? That would certainly put Susan’s knickers in a twist!

I don’t really do identity politics, people are people and there are nice ones and nasty ones of all sexes, sexualities, races, etc etc, so the thing I like about the Archers is that they don’t do too much box-ticking. (Is there an innuendo hiding there?) Adam and Ian are natural characters with heaps of other stuff going on in their lives, their homosexuality isn’t the core reason for them being in the show. So I guess similar to Goddess Deeva’s original post I’m for realistic diversity with some decent depth of character rather than superficial diversity for diversity’s sake. Therefore I’m not sure an abrupt coming out by an existing character would work, without at least a few years of groundwork being laid. However I worry that if a new lesbian couple were to strike it lucky in Ambridge’s frankly bizarre property market and move into Archersland the writers would start to deal with issues rather than people.

The scriptwriters are going to great lenghts to ensure that Anna and Carol never use the personal pronoun when talking about Max, to such an extent that it almost becomes silly. It must mean that Max is a woman or? Is it just a red herring, Max is a man and he has set up the dinner to end things once and for all, subsequently throwing Anna into emotional turmoil at a very inconvenient time just before the trial?

I still think Max is a woman. I listen to the Archers eps several times each and relistened to the ep in question. I dispute that it was a “he”. I think it was a “who”. Besides that, hetro married women do not generally refer to their other half as their “partner” they usually say “husband”. Why would Anna continually refer to Max as her “partner” if she was married to a man? However, if she was married to a woman she may well call her, her “partner”. As well as that, why are the script writers still so coy with the pronouns if the word “he” has already been mentioned.

I maintain, Max is a woman!

So Dee we now have one lesbian, we just need to find another. I like the idea that Phoebe would lead the way but wrong age group for Anna. No one springs to mind alas.

Well we do have another lesbian, Anna herself.

I’ve been waiting for two years for a lesbian in a Landrover (with a Lurcher) to drive into the village and take up residence in one of those over priced renovated cottages owned by Peggy’s evil sister (whose name escapes me). Now this hasn’t happened but now we have Anna (and Max) – and I guess we need at least one more lady gay to be airdropped into Ambridge or where is the romance coming from? Suggestions of established straight characters pairing up with Anna are a bit silly really – sexuality usually isn’t something you put on or take off like a jumper. There are exceptions of course but they have to well written (eg Caroline in Tango in Halifax) or they really don’t work. So I’m looking forward to a new queer character and a new romance for Anna.

Quite apart from staying around and embarking upon a new romance, I’m looking forward to Anna going back to Birmingham and possibly attending some of the excellent advocacy courses available as part of the Bar Council’s ongoing Continuing Professional Development training.
